What Is Structural Pruning

There are all these lofty ideas when I was studying to become a certified arborist but never were actually practiced. Structural pruning continues to not be explained and trees continue to have problems.

Reduces problems before they arise in trees

Easier to maintain in the future

There are tradeoffs of having a little more potential for decay

Can possibly stunt growth but it is worth it.

First off, no one knows different types of pruning for their trees. And that is not your fault, I think there are a lot of assumptions when it comes to trees. They're just living furniture on your lawn right? Well I thought so until I got introduced into this world.

Structural pruning is taking out problems in your tree before they get big. Pruning trees that are young, structural pruning takes out any codominant stems. A codominant stem is when there are two tops of a tree. These generally fork out into two or even more main trunks that start growing up. It is not very good for the structure of the tree because these become weak points when a tree starts to grow.

I have seen relatively young trees split and once it is a significant split, the tree has to go. The larger the tree the more of a concern it becomes. There are solutions to this like cabling and bracing but that is not apart of this article. If you want to learn more about this, give me a call or maybe I have an article on it now.

The antidote for twin topped trees is structural pruning when they're young. This ensures that
