This is just a brief rundown of things you need to know about certain laws in Calgary. Obviously go to the City of Calgary website for more information but this is your quick guide.

There are many programs and incentives to have healthy trees around Calgary. The city spends a lot to maintain and grow the tree canopy because it is a sign that we live in a thriving city. Lots of people love them and take care of them in their own way. The City of Calgary always has these programs every year for free trees, mulch, and supporting urban forestry activity.
First a common question is "Can I prune or cut my neighbors tree". Yes if it is on your property. In my opinion I would check with them as I have seen that get pretty ugly with disputes but to each their own.
There are a lot of city owned trees that they maintain. They're obviously on main roads but can be in your front yard too. It doesn't hurt to search up your address and take a look to make sure the tree in question isn't owned by them. If it is, then you can call 311 if it is not looking good or there are broken branches. The city generally wants to keep the trees around because they purify the air and actually increase the status of living here.
I have had a few calls about bylaw wanting pruning away from roadways or walkways. They will give you a warning and a deadline to when you need to comply. Over sidewalks it is 8 ft and over roadways it is 13 ft. It is best to keep on top of it.
Enmax comes around periodically and assesses the trees to make sure that they are not too close to powerlines. If you are thinking yours is closer than I believe 2 meters, you should give them a call. They are very responsive just because it can turn for the worst quick if they aren't on top of that sort of thing.
If you are unsure of anything regarding your trees, really make sure it is owned by you first. 311 is a quick call.
